How to Keep Your Hot Tub Water Clean and Balanced

Why water care matters

Warm water is a breeding ground for bacteria, so keeping it clean and balanced isn’t optional — it’s essential for safe, hygienic soaking and for protecting the tub’s components. A simple routine keeps the water clear and inviting.

Sanitise the water

Use the recommended sanitiser (such as chlorine or bromine, per your tub’s guidance) to keep the water free of bacteria. Maintain the right level — too little is unsafe, too much irritates skin and eyes.

Test regularly

Use test strips to check sanitiser level and pH a few times a week. Balanced pH keeps the water comfortable and the sanitiser effective, and protects the tub from scaling or corrosion.

Clean the filter

The filter traps debris and keeps water clear. Rinse it regularly and replace it as recommended. A clogged filter means cloudy water and a struggling pump.

Skim and wipe

  • Skim out leaves and debris regularly.
  • Wipe the waterline where oils and grime build up.
  • Rinse off before getting in to keep lotions and sweat out of the water.

Change the water periodically

Even with good care, hot tub water needs a full change every so often (frequency depends on use). Drain, clean the tub, and refill with fresh, balanced water.

Cover it when not in use

A cover keeps out dust, leaves and debris, retains heat, and reduces how hard your sanitiser has to work — making maintenance much easier.
